2008 "Day of Remembrance" Essay ContestThe Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), Sonoma County Chapter, is inviting Somoma County, Mendocino County, and Napa County high school and middle school students to participate in an Essay contest to commemorate the Day of Remembrance (DOR), February 19, 1942. The Day of Remembrance is an annual observation of Executive Order 9066 that led to the incarceration of over 100,000 American citizens and non-citizens of Japanese ancestry nationwide during the Second World War. In May, 1942, Japanese American citizens and those of Japanese ancestry who lived in Somoma county were taken from their homes and incarcerated in the Merced Assembly Center and in August transfererd to Amache Camp in Granada, Colorado. the Day of Remebrance is observed annually to remind us of this unfortunate incident in the history of the Untied States and the need for continued vigilance to avoid such occurence in the future. U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye said about the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, that this dark chapter in our history, "must remain in our collective conscience as a grave reminder of what we are capable of in a time of crisis and what we must not allow to happen again to any group, regardless of race, religion or national origin.” Click here to download this year's flyer with ALL contest information! Resource materials are available at the Sonoma County JACL Library. |
